A90 - Hamilton Bactrian

Distance: 90 +- miles
Pace: Strenuous
Climbing: 11,000+ft (with very long, arduous climbs)
Sweep: No.
SAG: No.
Skill Level: Strong Intermediate to Advanced
6:00am Carpool meetup time at Park-N-Ride near sunsplash
7:30am Meetup time at Frank Raines Park

Earlier this year I led a ride from Frank Raines Park outside Paterson up to Mt Hamilton and back. Always a great and scenic ride. But now it's time to kick it up a smidgen. We will still start at Raines Park summit Hamilton but now continue on down the West side to San Jose where we will refuel and then loop back. This makes for a 90-100 mile run with some decent climbs. We may modify where we go in San Jose depending on what we find down yonder and from your input.

You must be bring what you need as far as bike spares and food but we will have full services at the 1/2 point in San Jose and water at the 26 & 74 mile markers.

This is an "advanced" mountain ride. You must be in great hill-climbing shape and have a good base.

The Route

We will have two meetup points: The Park 'N Ride at SunSplash in Roseville at Eureka & Taylor will be our carpool meetup at 6:00am which you are highly encouraged to use (suggested driver compensation is $4/hr. of drive time). The official ride-start Meetup point is Frank Raines parking lot at 7:30.

Here is the carpool meetup point.

Here is the ride Start Point in Frank Raines Park which is a 90 min. drive from the Park 'N Ride.

Please carpool where possible. If you'd like to car pool directly from my house in Roseville, please send me an email for directions. I live near Hazel & Old Auburn and can hold three additional bikes.

My ride Rules:

  • You must be self-sufficient. We will help when possible but none is guranteed.
  • If you go ahead of the ride leader, you are on your own ride. Period.
  • You must wait at each turn or corner for the rider behind you to show her/him the correct direction. The person behind you does the same.
  • Helmets are required.

I reserve the right to change ride details, meetup times & locations. Always make sure to check this calendar entry the night before the ride.

Bad weather cancels.

It is kind of funny. A few years ago when I was at the Observatory, I was in awe of these cyclists who climbed the mountain. Never really figured that it would be me doing it some day.

This ride was a real crank-buster. Iowa Hill has nothing on the climb out of San Jose on Quimby Road that featured bucket loads of 20% sustained grade plus at least a few pop-ups of 25%. Standing for extended periods and extensive traversing was the only viable method of dispatching this puppy. Temps were in the mid-90s to 100 which made things all the more challenging. This 90 miles rivals the toughest of centuries. Thanks Doug for waiting for me!

5 stars for pain and suffering. Very hot, hard climbs(Quimby Rd.) Finishing the ride in 97* was not so much fun! Not really a fun ride in the heat. I think that doing this ride in the spring would make this ride real fun. Every thing green, and cold to climb! I think that Scott and I get to keep our man cards for doing this one! Thanks Scott again for doing this ride for me. Wish you could have been there Joe. Would have loved to have you there suffering with us.
