Ride Summary:
Terrain: Country roads and moderate hills
Climbing: about 2,500ft.
Distance: 40.4 Miles
Speed: 15-16 mph on flats / definitely slower on hills
Rider Level: Strong Beginner Minimum
Sweep: Yes
Starting at the Raleys in Auburn (Foresthill Exit off of I-80), this moderate paced ride (eg. not a race!) will take a scenic tour of the backroads between Auburn and Colfax. We first hit Hwy-49 and head out to Higgins Corner (Lake of the Pines) and then head back to Dog Bar Road connecting with Placer Hills Rd. above Meadow Vista, taking us up the back way to Colfax. We'll take a break at the Starbucks in Colfax (mile 25), then head back (mostly down hill) via the scenic route through Weimar and Applegate.
There is an easy shortcut at Meadow Vista if you want to take about 10 miles and some climbing out of the ride.
This is a moderate ride with a few challenging but short climbs. You should be a strong beginner or budding intermediate to be able to do this route comfortably.
This a swept ride. You will not be dropped or left behind. Those that prefer a faster pace can take off, or hang back and enjoy the scenery; your choice!
Please remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen as this is still summer, even though the temperatures will be lower than earlier this week. As always, your helmet is required!
We'll meet at the parking lot at Raleys around 7:45am and roll at 8:00am SHARP.
PLEASE PRINT AND BRING YOUR OWN ROUTE SHEET AND MAP. You can download them from here:
If you have any questions as to whether this ride is for you please feel free to ask!
oh, sure Paul ... just for that maybe I'll sing to you on the ride (if I have any breath!) :)
No problem Beth: Your house is the new rest stop!.
Are you riding tandem?
I'm a maybe Perry. I'll update in the morning. I've been fighting off some sort of cold the kids brought home from the germ warefare center (school). That said, would anyone be interested in carpooling? I'm in Rancho.
(JoelS) carpooling with a "maybe"... I don't know man, that's kinda shifty. Hopefully you feel strong like ox in the morning! (Jodi) I've had good results with timing the notes between breaths and on non dominant leg peddle strokes... it ends up sounding similar to a rusty old bike with intermittent chain squeak.. entertaining nonetheless!! : )
Is there anyone wants to get more miles by riding from Fish Hatchery? I am thinking about it. Perry, do you have a good route from Fish Hatchery to Raleys? Thanks, Julie
I know Paul, but carpooling might be just the kick I need.
Julie, up to Beals, then pick up Auburn-Folsom into Auburn. Then you'll need to navigate over to the ride start. You'll want to start no later than 6. It's dark in the am now too.
Hi Joel. I'd be interested in carpooling, but I don't have a bike rack. I have a Jeep Liberty and I'm sure both bikes would probably fit in the back. Let me know if you're interested.
@Julie: 26miles, approx. 2.000ft of climbing. I ran it on Map My Ride. CAUTION: Trust the MAP, not the CUE SHEET:

If you want a clean cue sheet, just yell and I'll make one. Basically bike trail to Folsom, up Auburn-Folsom Rd. to Auburn, Right on Lincoln Way through Auburn to Raleys @ Foresthill Exit. What time do you normally wake up in the morning! :-)
(Julie).. that is a long day your talking about, not to mention an early start. You would finish with something like 90miles +/- .
Thanks for the information. I think I will drive there tomorrow morning since I do have church in the afternoon. Maybe next time. We will have fun!
I'll be there in the morning. Should make it in plenty of time.
Paul, that sucks. Sorry to hear about it. Make sure to contact your ins. co. too. Good luck dealing with it all and getting a replacement.
If there are any early risers out there, I could use a cue sheet at the start. No printer in my tiny abode here. :-(
Perry- thanks for hosting! Can't believe we got all that rain but I enjoyed the route and the scenery anyway. Would love to do this ride again without the rain. :-)
Great ride today Perry...your rides get better and better!
Thanks for being a great Sweeper Perry! I couldn't have done it without you and Kathy! I definitely pushed my limits (and will have a great night's sleep now!), but the friends were great and the scenery spectacular. Glad we did not turn around at the sign of rain!!!!!! It was short lived and turned into a beautiful morning!
Perry, great job! Thanks! @ Joel, sorry you had to loop back around and look for us, but glad we caught you. Great day going from spitting rain to warmer temps.
Great Ride Perry!!! Enjoyed the "beginners" hills, especially riding with the other "beginners" I tried to cycle with the first 25 miles!
And my 7 mile detour up Ponderosa Way past Paoli Lane was certainly entertaining!
Thanks again Perry :-)
Lastly, many thanks to Misti, Larry, Daphne, Kevin Joel and others for helping me look for the key fob. After everyone left I headed to Raley's and bought of 4-pack of root beer to drown my sorrows ...
I then went about putting my pea brain to use and thought about all the places we had searched. The only thing left was ME!!! Sure enough I found my key under the item that UPS delivers day after day ...
Just another day in the life of Alan :-)
So glad I made myself get out there even though the rain gave me second thoughts! Beautiful ride and good people. Thanks!
Great ride today Perry. Thanks for the flat help (the CO2 was a life saver in the rain:-) Thanks for kicking my butt on the way home, William (?). Nice seeing old riding compadre Charles, and running into Micki (we used to be in the Sacramento Rough Riders together 20 yrs. ago). Made for another fantastic Wheels ride.
Alan, glad you found the keys. That was sooo weird.
Is anyone interested in a passenger and his bike. I'm near Winding and College Oak, 1/2 mile from I-80 access. I will not sing to you I promise. : )
