70 +- miles
10,000 feet climbing
'B+' rated ride, advanced intermediate
NOT SWEPT - we will regroup at logical places on the route
7:15am meetup time at Flour Garden Bakery in Auburn (ignore first part of route sheet)
6:45am Carpool meetup time at Park-N-Ride near sunsplash.
Riders have been pining for Iowa Hill (Sarah). Well, here it is. We'll start in Auburn, mosey up to Colfax and then descend into the river canyon before starting one of the toughest climbs you'll ever meet (Iowa Hill). We will then yonder over to Foresthill Road for our mostly downward path to Foresthill and then back to Auburn.
As usual, you must be self-supporting (tubes, food, etc.) but there will be some places to stop for snacks/food, etc. (Colfax, Foresthill).
Please carpool where possible. If you'd like to carpool directly from my house in Roseville, please send me an email for directions. I live near Hazel & Old Auburn and can hold three additional bikes.
Did you follow the exact route? I have seen rdewithgps almost always rate the elevation gain as too much. Also, assuming you use a barometric altimeter, they can often be way off due to temperature changes, etc. If's a gos unit, they too can be way off since GPS is very inaccurate in elevation determination. Short story is that there is no foolproof way to get accurate total gain.
Upon further review no, We hugged the freeway and crossed at Applegate. Placer Hills and Plumtree will bring up the total, over 2.5k? we'll see. Fun ride none the less. We also started at Raleys. from last year. http://www.hammerinwheels.com/calendar/11236457/![]()

For what it's worth, here's the GPS track from this ride in October 2009...

the exact route doesn't matter so much to me, since it's a big slog either way.
Frank,
Sightly different ride - we go N a bit to keep from following the freeway. I don't know how much that changes the profile, probably not much.
Sarah was all hot-to-go on Iowa Hill but I realized that she will miss it any way because she is racing. Oh well. You can't please everyone.
Have fun guys. Kim will give you all a run for your money!
Do we have another Sarah on our hands with Kim? Or should I say pedals? Welcome Kim. We all need a good humbling.
Nice going Mica. Now everyone will have high expectations and I might just crack under all this pressure or just have a really bad day. Thanks for the compliment though...
Hehe...I'm sure you'll do fine Kim. Gotta give credit where credit is due after you kick mine and Jav's butt on the Auburn to Dutch flat ride ;-p.
Hey ..it was the 2 BBQ's that's all. ...actually even on a good day Kim and her boyfriend Tim can kick my a$$ ...especially if they show up in their tandem :-o
OK, you guys are setting the bar way too high. I'm going to show up and disappoint all of you
I doubt anyone will be disapointed Kim. You are way to modest. :-)
Don't worry Kim, I had my mandatory 580 kCal of chocolate today so I will be nice and slow (not implying you are slow) so that I will regretfully take up my place in last right off the start.
Hey guys (Hammering Wheels) I'm new to the group, How fast does this group plan on going?
OK. Our goal isn't to show up & kick anyone's butt, we just want to ride our bikes with other bike enthusiasts, but thanks again for the compliments.
Kim, didn't mean to come across that you and Tim show up to hammer and kick peoples butt. It was great riding with you last time. Just givin' ya a hard time and letting the guys know you both are very strong riders. We like to bust eachothers chops around here a lot ;-)
no problem Mica. We enjoyed riding with you last time time & are looking forward to Saturday.
Don't let him off the hook so easy Kim ...make him make you one of his cheescakes to make up for it :-)
Phil,
We will ride at a comfortable pace for that distance and amount of climbing. If you have looked at the posted route sheet, feel like you can do that kind of ride without stopping every 5 miles, you will be fine. I am 54 and am no superstar rider. I ride hard for my age but there are riders the same age who show me up all the time. Ex-racers would call me just better than slow. Come on out and let's have some fun. As a reference, Mica and I ride about the same pace.
Scott
Great see you all early tomorrow morning! with my (+1)
Did this in Oct and even with a mini trip down Mosquito Ridge Rd and still only had 71 miles with 7100 feet of gain. RidewithGPS is a bit over in this case. Just an FYI
