Ride Summary:
Terrain: Urban/most rural roads, moderate to steep climbs
Distance: C66
Speed: 16-18 on the flats
Climbing: ~4,500 ft
Rider Level: Intermediates and Up
Sweep: Yes! (see text at the bottom)
This ride is an extention/variation of the Newcastle Deli Coffee Shop Series serving as a final warm-up for the Napa Century the following weekend. I haven't been to the Deli in a while to eat so it's time to ride up there!
Once we climb our way to Newcastle we take Ridge Rd out to venture UP Chili Hill. From there we continue UP Crater Hill followed by a nice decent on Wise where we continue the climbing up Baxter Grade. Then we enjoy a bit of downhill along Mt Vernon where we come back into Newcastle via Ridge Rd then stop for lunch. In case you didn't get enough we head up Indian Hill after lunch then enjoy a "mostly" downhill return to Vic's.
Don't forget we gotta climb up to Newcastle with notable climbs up Sierra College 1 & 2, English Colony, and some backroads nearing Newcastle.
Most of the climbing is done in the first 48 miles. There will be regroups, water stops, and a lunch stop along the way. Bring $$$ for food and any fluids you may want to purchase along the way.
We will meet up at Vic's Market and DEPART by 7:30 am sharp! It's looking to be toasty and I want to get back before 1 pm.
You can view the map and elevation profile HERE. I need to work on the cue sheet and put something easier to read together so I will update you when I have that available.
You can view the cue sheet in the files section of the site. I will be bringing 45 copies with me that morning that will also include mine and Perry's cell phone #. Please bring things to make the cue sheet visible! I took the extra time to type up my own, make it simple, and put it in a large font!
The usuals are required: Helmet, Suncreen, Fluids, Snacks, $$$, and stuff to fix flats.
NOTE: Since so many people have signed up for this ride, we'll be running two groups of riders. If you start with the faster group and drop off the back, you can ride with the second group that will also be the ride sweep.
If you have any questions please e-mail me.
OK, I make 40, Blaine get your midget all cleaned up and ready for Perry and Mica's man date.
Boy what a ride this is turning out to be, My clown riding gear is all clean and ready to go, the music box is full of tunes, singing voice is "WELL", and my dancing shoes are all set with bells on. The Deli does have a nice stage to dance on, And I have to work, boy this suck to see everyone having fun and I can't come out and play.
The Deli has been notified that we will be invading them Sunday. No gaurantee on the cinnamon rolls as the head chef/baker is out in Napa for a special class and won't be back until tomorrow. But the request is in. There will still be plenty of sandwiches, salads, scones, and other yummy things though.
Mica: I'm pretty sure cheesecake is considered a cinnamon roll substitute. Who knows, maybe Newcastle Deli will start carrying them . . .
I'm new at this. I couldn't print the cue sheet. I found it, but I saved it and couldn't open it. Please advise.
This early of a ride is really going to mess with my saturday night!
Jav, I'll split the cinnamon roll with you!! And Hooper, LEFT on Wise after the Baxter climb!
@ Shon and everyone: The file is currently in Excel format so you need that to view it. I'll get it to a pdf when I have a chance. Don't fret. I'm bringing PLENTY of nice double sided cue sheets, with the margin cut down, and nice big font. I just put it up there so you can take a look before hand.
@ Perry: The Deli always has cheesecake...at least everytime I'm there.
@ Scott: Then go out Friday night like me!
@ Eric: That half of a cinnmon roll is mine! ;-p
Mica, did you receive my email with a new one page cue sheet, in color and easy to read? I sent it to piano man. I have made 25 copies and it is easy to read and to fold by sections.
@Shon and everyone ..I made a pdf out of your s/s and uploaded it to the files section, and again this is just so you can see the route ahead of time (and plan your "attacks" ;-) )as Mica is bringing route sheets.
@ Mica or Eric ...either one ...I know I just want 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 cinamon roll
@ Linnie: I did get you're e-mail and replied to you...so please read it. Trust me, the cue sheets I have made up are easy to read.
@ Jav: Thanks, I was just about to do that after putting out fires. Now I can watch some TV!
Allie just found out that she doesn't have to work, so I'll half something with her!
O_o I think this is what Perry and I will feel like Sunday... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWymXNPaU7g![]()

Good thing I copied off a few extra route sheets today stopping in a work. I'll have 50 on hand.
Since I have 50 people's attention!!! Can you all look and sign up for the Connect 4 A Cure ride coming up on Sept 25th. Its for the Make A Wish Foundation AND Chris Carmichael (Lance Armstrong's trainer) will be riding with us as well.
Go to www.connect4acure.org! :)
Mica/Perry ...at this rate you're gonna need an event permit for this ride :-o
Hey Jennifer - I'm riding the Connect-for-a-Cure, so let's say hi on Sunday! People should check it out - it's a benefit for a great cause!
Just looked at the Bike Hikers website. They are also starting their ride from Vic's Market. Will there be room for the actual shoppers?
All of this conversation... WOW! I feel left out. So here I am... ummmmmmmmmmm. Ok then. See ya later!
Our ride starts from Vics a half hour before the BikeHikers. I hope they find some parking!
Sara, I'll hit Sunrise on the bike trail about 6:20 if you want to ride up with me. I think Rick might, and I'm picking up another friend at the Fish Hatchery at 6:30. Getting there early will leave time for a coffee from Starbucks before ride start!
Charlie, welcome aboard. As you can tell, this is a pretty low key crowd. Clown suits are optional on most rides, but bringing your own midget earns you extra points if we can draft.
Of course the biggest ride of the season happens on a day that I can't attend. FML!
@Jeannie & Mike: There are multiple places to bail and shortcut the ride. Come talk to Mica or myself.
@ Sara: I can carpool with you. I'm near Madison and Dewey. @ Javier: Screw the permit. Vic's is gonna need to build another parking lot! @ Linnie: If you still have those extra cue sheets can you bring them? I have 50 and it would be nice not have to make a trip to Kinkos tomorrow. @ Everyone: After one person signing up for my ride last Sunday I sometimes wonder if this is all a joke and I'll be the only one in the parking lot, LOL! Good thing April fools is long gone...
Must call the Deli again too...we just might clean them out if I don't ;-p
@Amador: This is a challenging ride. There are some climbs that you may end up walking. No problem! There are also several places that you may shortcut the ride if it becomes too long. The group is large enough that there will be all levels of riders. You're welcome to join us and give it a shot!
@Julie, sounds good!
@Mica, you might build up an alternate route or two on ridewithgps for less climbing or less distance for those interested in an easier or shorter ride. This one has some good climbing, some steep (Chili).
Mica, I will bring the extra 25 copies. The only thing missing is the contact info in case someone gets lost. But now I think that is a moot point. What we need now is CHP assistance; road closures; event signs; sag; just like an organized ride; but free and decidedly more fun.
Thank you Linnie. @ Joel: No alternate routes here! This is the ride I'm leading so people should be ready to ride. I'm not dealing with more cue sheets maps. We will show/tell people the easy way home if needed. But running two separate routes on one ride in my experience is no beuno especially if they start in my group and need to drop back to Perry's group.
@Mica, I certainly wasn't suggesting someone lead a different route! This'll be a fun ride. See ya in the morning.
Mica, I will look for you at Sierra College and Eureka. I live right near there and have a 3:00 appt to get to. Plus I will free up One parking spot at Vic's that way!! Anyone care to join me I will be there at 7:45. What a crowd! Patti
Keep it coming peeps. Mica wants to shater the old attendance record of 53!
Great to see everyone this morning, sorry if I missed anyone!
GREAT RIDE AND GREAT PEOPLE! Thanks Mica for setting it up and thanks Jeff for taking pics. Who knew hills could be soooooo much F U N!!!!!!!!!!! Cant wait for the Napa Century.
Congratulations Jose, Amanda and Zeke! This was one heck of a step as your first ride off of the bike trail! Wow! Oh, and happy 5th anniversary (A & Z).
Videos are done!
Although I did shoot more video, I must have hit the record button too fast after power it up and the camera did not pick up the footage. Ahhh?.live and learn I guess. This was my first attempt.

The new vids are on the upper right side of the link.
If someone would care to help me stitch them all together with Adobe, or MovieMaker, that would be huge! We can then post a single video of the event.
Had a great time! Javier & Co, thanks for including me in the pace line - Oh yes! Joel, I was HAPPY "to support" U! Mica, as always yur da bomb!
Thank you so much Mica for the great ride and all of your efforts to organize such a successful day for every riders capabilities.
Thank you everyone for coming out on the ride! (that can be taken the wrong way...lol) If my attendance figures are correct the total for the day was 62 Hammerin' Wheelers! New record for both the MTB and road side. If you attended the ride and weren't counted the RSVP or if you are on the list and didn't attend let me know.
thanks for ride. the hills...the hills...
enjoyed meeting all the people.
(Mica, I didn't rsvp for this ride - please add me to the list of riders - this is definitely one I want credit for finishing...barely)
Mica,
Thanks for organizing this ride. Great job and wonderful route through wonderful country. As with any great "Chili" it only hurt a little while eating up the hill, yet the bike commute this morning is where it really burned. Keep up putting on great rides. The few that missed this ride should keep a look out for your rides in the future.
Fun ride, though it looks like I missed some good times @ lunch. Thanks again for the looooong pulls Glenn, and sorry for not recognizing your crash signs in the market Sarah, probably due to oxygen depletion:-) Thanks for the great job organizing Mica!
I decided to make up for not going on the Auburn to Foresthill ride, and rode this route today, getting a late start this afternoon. I can tick of Baxter Grade and Chilli off my cycling bucket list. Fantastic route. I think it deserves a B rating with the Ridge Rd. and Indian Hill climbs at the end. Ridge was pain. I had a bit of a second wind on Indian Hill. I found Baxter's bark to be louder than it's bite in terms of climbing. Beautiful climb tho. The Mt. Vernon descent was pretty exciting.
I think I should bring in the calvary to heard all these sheep!
