I'm told this is a beautiful ride up in the pines! And it should be a bit cooler up above Auburn. A quote from a former leader: "Any of you who have ridden north of Auburn know how different the feel is up there. Not so many cows and pastures, more pines and shadows. And near the end I'll show you the gem that is Millertown Rd, the highlight of a mostly downhill finish." Refreshments at Combie Deli - mile 22, and Flyers, mile 46
NB!!! I haven't done this ride, so we all have to help with directions and be our own leaders ... you'll need to bring a positive and flexible attitude (generally not a problem with this group!). I'm offering as a group ride because I'd like to check it out - but with the above disclaimer! A map with elevation profile (click on show in the upper left) can be found here: Bikely Map
NOT a hammerfest. We will ride at a moderate pace. People are welcome to ride at their own pace, but I will be regrouping at the regroup points.
The numbers are approx 52 miles and 4000 ft of climbing, you can shorten a bit and avoid some climbing by opting out of the optional powerhouse loop at the end . I'm rating as B/C: B for distance/terrain, but C for speed. - be sure to read our club ratings so you know if it's for you: much more of a C than a B ride, but know that the climbs will be challenging (as always!
)
Please remember to bring water and snacks. As always, your helmet is required! Don't forget the sunscreen! Also remember to bring a pump or CO2, spare tube(s) and patchkit
Late lunch at Newcastle Produce and Deli after for those who are interested!
Happy Pedaling!
Hey Charles - I'm glad we did the route too - it was really beautiful and a great challenge (although not overwhelming - but Lone Star was definitely tough!). I just want to get good enough to ride with you because you are way fun!!!! Thanks for coming out & for your encouragement - I agree this should be standard fare for intermediates in our club - the roads are just spectucular. It was great training for Napa!
Just an FYI for those interested in ratings - this ride was definitely a step up from the ride we did last weekend: B/C 48 - Folsom to Trailhead Coffee with Ridge Road. Just more climbing less flat. We went slower and finished after the boys, but definitely worthwhile and a good challenge at any pace. Roads were great and gorgeous scenery when you are climbing :)!
Jodi, Thanks for organizing! It was good to get out and crush some hills with some passionate riders.
I'm looking forward ot the next one :)
Hey Glenn - nice to meet you! Hope to see you sometime in the hood! Since we are so close, we should carpoll to some rides. Sorry we didn't get to Combie in time ... Kris and I had a few wrong turns in Auburn. I have to update the route sheet, but too tired right now ... :)
Hats off to you, Jodi, for sticking your neck out on this one! Not HW's standard roads, but SHOULD BE. This course was DECEPTIVELY challenging and beautiful. Great variations - Lone Star Road definitely zapped my legs! Strongly recommend this ride for solid intermediates and above. Mega Groovy Cool Kudos to you and loverboy Ed.
