I'll be the tall gal in the train station with the ultra smooth "off-white" Jamis Aurora touring bike (red handlebars and pedals) with rack.

Howdy Folks, This looks like a really cool event. My idea is to meet at the Sac Amtrack Station at 4:15 (w/ bikes ... for 4:40 pm train) and to take the train to Davis, then to ride home under the stars. People are welcome to also ride to Davis and meet us at the event - but Amtrack is a good option for us folks that have to work.

Feel free to email me with Questions ([masked]) or call [masked] (cell). More details/descriptions follow below:

**UC Davis bicycling enthusiasts may be interested in attending a special program next week at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame in downtown Davis.**

David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History (2004) and The Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance (published this year), is scheduled to visit the museum July 23, to give a presentation and sign books.

The 5:30 to 7 p.m. program is free for public members of the Hall of Fame, or $5 at the door for others. (Afterward, New Belgium Brewing is scheduled to present its Clips of Faith tour; see details below.)

The Hall of Fame moved to Davis in April from Somerville, N.J. Some of the historic bicycles that are on display are on loan from UC Davis’ Pierce Miller collection.

Organizers of Herlihy's visit said the author will present a slide show of images relating to The Lost Cyclist. Herlihy’s book tells the true story of Frank Lenz’s cycling trip around the world, begun in the spring of 1892, riding a new-fangled “pneumatic safety bicycle,” prototype of the modern bicycle.

Of course, the book’s title gives away the ending: Lenz never made it. Two years into his journey, and nearing the final leg, he disappeared in eastern Turkey.

According to a news release from the Hall of Fame, Herlihy’s slide show features images from before and during Lenz’s journey, through the United States, Japan, China, Burma, India and Persia.

The new release indicates that most of the images came from private sources and have never before been published.

The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame is at 303 Third St., at B Street, at the southwest corner of Central Park. People wishing to reserve tickets for the Herlihy program can do so at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St.

'Beer and film tour'
After Herlihy’s program, New Belgium Brewing plans to present its Clips of Faith tour in Central Park — “a beer and film tour,” with the name playing off New Belgium’s Lips of Faith beers and the Clips of Faith video contest, in which New Belgium asks for entries dealing with one or more of the following: craft beer, sustainability and whimsy.

The Clips of Faith tour, according to New Belgium, invites people “to view handmade films while enjoying handmade beers under the stars.” Beer sales benefit local organizations, in this case the Davis Bicycles! advocacy group. The Central Park event is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., with the films beginning at dark on an outdoor screen.
