Midnight Century F100

Come out for a romp under the stars and full moon with Davis BC, S. Wheelmen, and S. Bike Hikers on the annual Midnight Century (shorter options available). We start in Davis, ride out to Grimes, and return on the same roads. Riding by moonlight on a warm summer evening with friends and little traffic is a lot of fun. This is not a race although it could be your fastest century :-) The only hill is the I-5 overpass. Lights front and rear required (need at least 5 hours worth) and reflective gear highly recommended. $10.00 fee (payable at start of ride) covers SAG support and goodies at the rest stop (near the turn around point). Meet at Carl's Jr. on the corner of Covell and Poleline Rds in Davis. Important...be sure to RSVP by July 17th so we have enough food for everyone.

UPDATE 6/29:
Shorter ride options available but all ride options include the rest stop in Grimes. Since this is a multi-club ride there is no need to RSVP "No" or "maybe"...Only need to RSVP if you plan to attend.

History...While this is the first time this has been led as a combined ride with other groups including Hammerin Wheels it is a long established ride with Davis Bike Club and Bike Hikers. It has a 10+year history. It is a very fun ride with few turns and great support for the nominal fee. Normally a very well attend ride with many riders repeating from previous years.

A concern was voiced about safety. This ride goes out Rd102 to Knights Landing in daylight...road 102 has very wide shoulders. Highway 45 to Grimes in very lightly traveled....coming back on Rd 102 is in the dark but traffic is much quieter and you still have a wide shoulder. We do recommend that riders ride in groups of 3 or more. This ride has been led by both Davis Bike Club and Sac Bike Hikers for 10+ years...I do not recall any accidents...none with vehicles.

A word about lighting...high powered head lights are not needed on this ride. When riding in a group you tend to borrow light from other riders...after dark we recommend the buddy system. We will have also have a full moon. So if you aren't coming because you think your lighting is not good enough you can rest easy. A battery powered LED light will suffice and if it won't go 5-6 hours bring extra batteries or have a second light on the bike.

This ride is actually very safe and extremely well organized. It's been done so many years that it's become a tradition for several clubs. It's a great first century if you've never done one before.

I see nothing unsafe about this ride. There are more than ample safety precautions in place. We will continue to support this ride. Enough on the safety already.

I hate to sound like a wimp....but what are the shorter options?

Marshon, the options are 98, 84, 64 and 50 miles. All riders meet in Davis, and then the two longer groups start riding in Davis, the two shorter ones then drive to Knights Landing to do their starts (and finishes). There are two turnaround points, which is why there is a 14 mile distance difference between the 2 Davis and 2 Knights Landing rides. All rides share the same rest stop in Grimes. It is a clever setup, and it works!

Javier...why not do both? BBQ and the Midnight Century...a certain person you know (who will remain nameless) is doing just that and plans to ride one of the shorter options from Knights Landing. :-)

Steve, will be to long of a day for me to try and do this, SBH BBQ late morning, HW BBQ in evening ...not to mention that's way past my bed time (pretty muh 8:30-9:00 and it's lights out for me). Although I'd love to do the ride, the late night thing ain't my cup of tea, which is why I have missed it the past 3 years I've been a SBH member.

Sorry about the no shows Steve. You did a good job on the food and drinks. The food was great. Couldn't eat very much because of the pace we were riding. Could have used an extra water stop. Actually went through about 5 bottles of water. Thanks again for the great job. It was nice to see the Sag car out there at 12:30 in the middle of nowhere. Thanks again.

    Hey Steve!
What a great ride! My fastest average on a century to date! Sweeet! Bummer about the no-shows. They certainly missed out. Your crew was totally awesome. Took really took good care of us. Everyone was so nice and the food was very delicious. I would definitely do this ride again! Thanks! : )

I updated the attendance record based on the master roster at the ride start. If you did attend it's possible I missed you due to illegible writing.

As the ride leader for the Midnight Century I heard all positive comments from those who rode. No incidents of any kind, all riders had big smiles on their faces. The only negative I have is that I had nineteen riders who were "no-shows" I based food purchases for 66 riders...a 71% turnout. If you were one of the no shows you still owe me $10 as that is money out of my pocket...please contact me. I would hate to make this a prepay only event.

The second rest stop was a little chaotic like they warned. As a century rider, I would have liked a little more direction on the section beyond the rest stop. I ended up riding it alone and wasn't sure I was on the right road until I finally saw other riders.

That was quite a ride! My legs were trashed at the end. More so than the Death Ride! Joe talked me into using my Single Speed to do the ride. Joe changed his front chain ring from a 42 to a 46. He and Sarah left me in the dust at the start of the ride because I spun out with the wind behind us. I was lucky to find a couple that were going between 23-25 and drafted them and pulled some also. I caught Joe and Sarah at the lunch stop and we rode the last 60 mi. together. The 3 of us took turns pulling against the wind and got back fast. We kept picking up people, and dropping them on the way back. Few people wanted to help pull at the pace we were doing. Kind of a different ride. I think that I would rather suffer climbing hills all day!

The event was great, the experience interesting. Terrific downwind leg going out, tempting most to ride beyond their pace abilities. Having ridden 60+ miles that morning, it caught up to me earlier than usual. Then after the sun was gone, the bugs came out. I struggled getting to the rest stop in beautiful downtown Grimes, where there was a copious amount of refreshments. Then another 7 flat miles to the turnaround point, where it immediately became apparent that the tail wind hadn't died, but was now a headwind. From there on it was what you call a GRIND. Fortunately, the breeze was a cooling one. Was actually kind of fun riding without a front light in the light of the full moon. Don't worry, I turned it back on whenever an approaching car was within a mile or two. I found myself marveling at the self-discipline of RAAM riders, doing this for 8-10 days, 20+ hours a day.
