F/E100-The Sacramento Century

Chevys (map)

Selected By: Jeff Sanford

Ride Summary

Distance: 100 miles (and change)
Terrain: Flat as I can get it, climbing should not be a concern.
Rider Level: Strong Beginners and up. Riding 65 miles at a 13mph pace should not be a problem.
Speed: 13-15 mph.
Sweep: Yes

We roll at 7am sharp! Arrive as early as need to be ready at 7am!

This serves as your official notice that the Hammerin' Wheels will once again hold a Century ride to wrap up bike month.

This is as beginner as centuries get. If you ever wanted to try a 100 mile ride but never wanted to pay for it, feel pressured by the more experienced cyclists, or ride to some far away town this ride is for you!

Our more seasoned riders should be aware that this ride is for beginner century riders, meaning we ride as a group and the pace will be much slower that you may be comfortable riding. The pace should be in the 13-15 mph range. So, If you are looking to blow through a century in 6 hours or less this is not the ride for you. On the flip side of that, we need to keep the pace in the 13-15 mph range so we are not on the trails all day long. If you RSVP please do not be offended if I contact you to see if you can handle the ride. I will have to turn you back if I determine that you are not going to be able to complete the ride in a timely manner. This ride traditionally takes between 7-7.5 hours of ride time.

As a note, this is not a fully supported ride with SAG and food at rest stops (hence its free!). This is simply a 100+ mile self supported ride. All stops will have water and restrooms. Aside from that you will need to provide your own snacks. There will be a lunch stop as well as a post ride dinner at Chevys (please bring cash for dinner!!!!)

The route will utilize as much bike trail as possible. When trails are not an option there will bike lanes or roads with minimal traffic. However, there are a few short sections of construction that may or may not be a factor (On Auburn Folsom Road near the entrance to Beals Point.).
The 2010 route is complete. The ride comes in at ~101 miles and ~2000 feet of gain, which is as flat as I can get it without retracing our steps. This trims about 500 feet of the ride from last year and to give further perspective it is ~1300 less than Foxys. There are no "major" climbs and the steepest grades are in the 5-7% range, similar to taking a trip to Beals Point.

Here is the Route Map and the cue sheets for this ride. I will have a limited number to hand out at the ride. Please print one before the ride if you can.

You should bring plenty of water, snacks, and money for a lunch stop. You should also carry a spare tube or 2 along with any necessary repair items. Helmets are required.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

Ok, but I'm not going for Mickey D's or Burgerthing any of that mystery meat.
How about throwing in acouple hill repeats at the end to make it interesting?

Well I am glad to see Blaine, Scott and Will are there to keep things in order. Otis would not stand a chance against those "other" trouble makers. Especially if their gang leader gets out of the violin recital.

Doctor's orders; No riding for awhile. What defines awhile? One week? I can do that. I am hoping the bones in my arm heal very very fast. See everyone soon.

I was thinking of "bowing" out as well but I think I will start with the group and if I am overwhelmed...will "beg off" before logging all those miles.

Glad I made the first part! Like to see old friends, and meet some new ones too! Thanks Meredith for the awesome conversation on the way to Discovery Park. I ended up with 61 for the day, getting my 301 for the week & still made it home by noon. Tried to catch everyone at Chevys after, but pup hiking time came before many of you finished. See ya all soon.

Thanks Jeff for organizing another fun ride! Thanks to Jeff's family for the awesome food surprise at the rest stop. Can you say "above and beyond the call of duty?" Thanks to Mica for leading (and Happy Birthday.) What a fabulous group of people! Supportive, fun, funny! Really enjoyed dinner afterwards especially the conversation! See ya next time!

Rides like this are why I do what I do. This ride started back in 2008 with 8 people, 14 in 2009 and 32 this year. Every year there are people who have completed their first century, this year there were at least 4 (possibly more that I didn't know about) Congrats to all of you on your major milestone! Especially Scott who had a previous long of 40 miles!! I had an absolute blast! I can't thank everyone enough for their patience and help with this ride. This ride would definitely not be what it was without the support of everyone who attended. Bummed I had to bail on the post ride meal but I had a hot date with a 4 year old who, as always, beats her dad at Candyland. A special thanks to my better half for all her help with the prep and hosting our 2nd rest stop, I wouldn't have slept if I had to do it by myself. Thanks Honey! See everyone in 2011!

What a wonderful day for a century bike ride. Got to meet some new people and catch up with a few people I haven't seen in awhile. This is becoming a nice Hammerin Wheels tradition of a century in May Is Bike Month. Dinner at Chevy at the end was a nice touch. Thanks to Jeff for organizing such a great ride and his family for all the hard work preparing everything for our 2nd break.

This is the funnest ride I have done to date. I met so many great people and talking with them melted the 100 miles into just a fun day. Can we do it again next weekend?

What a great ride! What's better than spending the entire day on a bike with friends? It seemed more like a big party than a bike ride to me (with the exception of our 9 mile sprint in which Greg put the hurt on all of us ;-p). Best event this club puts on hands down as it represent what the club is all about. Friends, fitness, obtaining goals, and having fun! Big Kuddos to Jeff and all you do. Post ride meal was most excellent with everyone (I may have burned more calories laughing!). Thanks for the "birthday wishes". As if I didn't look dorky enough with my cycling clothes on I added a big sombrero....at least I got free ice cream! Ended up rolling off 137 miles for the day.

Fun ride. Was it really 100 miles? With the great attitude and social pace it did not seem like 100 miles. Thx to Jeff and his bride for making this a fun event. And thx to Mica for keeping us trouble makers in line. :o)

Best ride for the year 2010. Thanks to Jeff and family for the hard works to provide fruits and foods at the rest stop. Thanks Jeff and Mica for the leadership for the ride. I'm really enjoy it very much. It was nice that I had a chance to see all nice people in the Hammerin Wheels.

Thanks Jeff for organizing this ride, and thanks to your wife for the wonderful snacks in the park. Met a lot of great folks on this ride. It was cold all day long, and the head wind the last 5 miles didn't help any.

What a great day! The ride was well organized and thanks to Jeff's wife for the great treats at rest stop #2. Thanks Jeff for your hard work putting this together and thanks to Mica for helping lead the group. It was a great way to do my first century! Thanks also to a fun group of riders.

Good times, we did a nice 9 mile sprint, but the road turned to crap and it became very dangerous. We also hammered it down from Beals point-good times. Weather was perfect, food was great, company was great
