B+54 Frank Raines to Lick Observatory Wildflower Bonanza & Climbing Challenge

FISH HATCHERY (map)

Selected By: Scott Taggart

54 miles
6200 feet
'B+' rated ride
NOT SWEPT - we will regroup up at the top and at a few places on route
8:00am meetup time in at the Hatchery for the carpool to the starting point. The starting point meetup time will be 10:15.

This is a tough 54-miler in a rugged and beautiful part of San Antonio Valley on the way up to the 4,000'+ Lick Observatory. You will experience superb wild flower filled scenery and great views once at the top of Lick Observatory. The final 5 mile climb to the top promises to sort the wheat from the chaff. If you have done rides my Amador Series, you know what you are in for. This area is very secluded - there is NO support of any type other than water at the turn-around point. If you think 54 miles is not enough for you, please withhold judgement until after you have taken a "lick" at it. I have never ridden this and not felt I got my money's worth. A longer distance option for you over-achievers is to start and end in Patterson which will give you a 34 miles bonus.

Here's the route.

The climb ranges from 4% to 12-13% for the last few miles.

LUNCH will be what you bring. We can do a group meal afterwards for those who would like to.

BRING SNACKS! 2 full water bottles, helmet, and some money required. There is one place at 1/4 & 3/4 to buy food along the way. Water is available at the 1/4, 1/2 & 1/4 points.

Must be able to fix a flat and carry all the equipment with you.

If you want to go by yourself, that's fine, but carpooling is highly recommended since this venue is 120+ minutes from Sac. If you carpool, please consider paying the driver $4/hr of travel time.

If you have room in your car, or prefer to get a ride, please post in the comments section.

Bad weather cancels.

Still thinking this one over. Very tempting, and I have been riding much stronger the last week or so. Climbing Hamilton in cool wx is so tempting.

Dale & Joe, we have just the right number to carpool together in my van. Meet me at 7:45ish so we can get headed out. We can talk on the way down about some options for extra riding mileage, if you like. Please call me on my cell if there are any issues (posted in the "How to find us" section above). We are going to have an awesome ride!

Hey Alex, we were thinking of you when we stopped a your favorite post ride eatery. Too bad you couldn't make this one. BTW on the climbs you could not see what lay ahead, so it would have been to your liking :)

Epic ride on an epic day with great people. What more needs to be said?

Wow. That main climb up the observatory was insane!! 5 miles O' pain! The fact that the men made it all the way up was a given, but I was totally impressed by how well Austin did!

This was some beautiful scenery, an outstanding riding environment. The weather was perfect. And the hills, those hills just kept on giving. There were significant climbs to the base of Lick, the assent to Lick was relentless, and then the hills on return to Frank Raines were just as welcoming coming home as they were on the way out. Thanks Scott, for pulling another novel and very interesting challenge out the hat.
