Davis Double Century

If you've never done a double century before, this one is the very best one to start with because it's local (no hotel costs!), very doable as a first double, well run, friendly, has moderate time limits, and it qualifies for the California Triple Crown (www.caltriplecrown.com). The Davis Double and the Grand Tour (LA Wheelmen) are consistently the best run, best organized doubles in the state! This double is organized by the Davis Bike Club. Start/Finish is at the Veterans' Memorial Center , 203 E. 14th St. (14th & B Streets), in Davis. Start time is between 5:15 & 5:45 a.m. Registration is limited to 1,000 riders. REGISTER EARLY.

Registration is by ACTIVE.COM (www.active.com/cycling/davis-ca/41st-annual-davis-double-century-2010) and costs $80.00. If there are any openings on the event day, you may be able to register then, but it will cost you $160!

Considering how hot Cobb Mountain can get, it may be worth starting early two years ago, it hit 113 degrees! Steve's probably starting at 4:30am and I may do the same. If anyone else is interested, maybe we can do an early group start. The first part of the ride is very flat . . . great for a speedy paceline to "get out of Dodge".

Geeze Steve, maybe you can sign up with the Wheelmen also and "Triple Dip". 600 miles credit in a day! :-)

Having done this as my first double last year I will offer 2 pieces of advice. 1. Start as early as humanly possible but not too early that you are at the first rest stop before it "opens". I was on the road at 4:30 and that seemed to work out pretty well. 2. Do whatever you can to make it by the Cache Creek casino before dark. That several mile stretch of highway has zero shoulder and very heavy traffic. I rode it in the dark and would not wish that on anyone. My 2 cents.

Do they check your number before you start and they're OK with folks starting before the official start time?

No they do not check your number. BUT it is a good idea to pick up your registration packet on Friday before the event. Otherwise you will be at their mercy and fighting the crowd to check in on Saturday morning. There is no official start...you leave when you are ready to.

Sorry Staggart, no 13 year-olds allowed. Some of us older folks hate having our doors blown off! :-)

I'd like to meet you all since I don't seem to recognize anyone except Lourdes at the different rides. I'll be wearing a sleeveless white and black jersey riding a black K2 and a sporting a camelback. Give me a shout if you see me on the ride.

What a difference 25 degrees makes! Even though Cobb mountain and Resurrection were in the high 80's instead of 113 like a couple of years ago, it was still challenging. We even had FOG in the morning after Rest Stop 2! Everything was incredibly green with tons of wildflowers, and the streams were in full flow. With the lower temperatures, most people that I know were coming in with much faster times than the last few years. I heard comments like "it's still daylight!" when I got back. On the way back, I ended up in one of those pace lines that you can only dream of; not one but three tandems rotating in the lead. Even with a little bit of wind against us, the only way to describe it was "ripping". We must have come into Guinda with at least 20 riders. What a kick! Davis continues to be one of the best run doubles ever. The sags and water support were everywhere. The rest stops were great. Thanks to the Davis Bike Club.

We had a great ride. It was perfect weather. The Boggs Mountain climb was pretty tough! We left 5:10 and finished at 8:10. My butt was RAW when we finished!! My son, Austin, 13 did a great job and out-climbed me on Resurrection!! Hey, if any of you who know Austin would be so gracious to send him your thoughts on him finishing this ride, I know he would be thrilled!! His email is [masked]. Jess, Joe and Joan - nice to see you out there!! See you on the next ride!

This year DDC is great compared to last year ride. The weather is about 20 degree lower than last year and I was able to completed it 45 minutes sooner. Last year, I was using the regular crank that was a nightmare at the Cobb mountain and Highway 20, Clear Lake up hill climbing. With the compact and 11-28 cassette iI could climb the hills much easier. At the turn into the Highway 16, it was a big head wind. I had to draft with other until I rode pass the Cache Creek casino. Over all ride was great, finished it total riding time about 12:17 minutes. Departure at 4:30AM got back at 6:42PM. Check out the riding route at if you're interested. http://conn...

Cobb Mountain just killed me. I didn't know what to expect but 2000 ft climb over 10 miles with up to 12% grade at noon was just a hard slog. At least we got past that fast casino traffic on hwy 16 with no shoulders while it was still light. Of course, I'll do it again next year to improve my time.
