C34 - Modified Auburn Hills Loop, back in time for the Super Bowl

Newcastle/Indian Hill Park n Ride (map)

Selected By: Mica Dugan

Ride Summary:
Terrain: Hilly / Busy and country roads / 3000 ft of climbing
Distance: 34 Miles
Speed: 15 - 18 mph on flat terrain and slower on the hills
Rider Level: C34 (Intermediate)
Sweep: No, but we'll trow in a few re-groups.

I did this variation for the first time leading with Jeff S and I can't wait to do it again. We can work up a nice big appetite for consuming all of those Super Bowl goodies! biggrin

We will meet at Newcastle Park & Ride off of Hwy 80 at Indian Hill Exit at 9:00 am and leave promptly at 9:15 am. This route goes up some rather steep hills including Shirland Tract and Ridge Rd, so you should be an intermediate hill-climber. We also start climbing early in the route so if you need additional time to warm up please arrive early!

We'll traverse through some fabulous little-traveled roads of Newcastle, including Millertown, and over to Lincoln including Virginiatown. We'll also go DOWN Steve's favorite, Chili Hill Rd.

We should be back before noon, so we can all go shower and make our Super Bowl festivities.

The cue sheets have been uploaded to our files section. Please print one out if you need one.

Here is the link to the route on Map My Ride.

Also as a reminder if you guys stop at the top of Shirland Tract, make sure everyone is completely off the road. It might even be a better idea to stop down by the stop sign at Maidu. We don't need another "Warren incident".

Good call Jeff. I'll also remind everyone to not flap their gums and miss a turn or two... ;-p

This ride had a great mix of climbs, descents, and flats - and like all HW rides, great people. I had a lot of fun trying to keep up with Jeff, Scott, SteveMD, the guy who only has 457 miles on his road bike (Dave?), and the pink Madone (Andrea?), way to push it...and Rex, dude, all your hardwork is paying off. It seems like every time I see you riding your faster and faster. Lastly, Mica thanks for going the extra mile printing queue sheets and guiding the group on hidden turns. Perfect ride.

Lots of strong riders out today to work up an appetite for Super Bowl. The hills provided plenty of bit, but the company along the way made them seem a little easier. The rain held up for the most part except for some sprinkles along Millertown road. Big thanks to SteveMD for bringing up the caboose. See you all again soon.

In spite of falling out of the group ride due to a flat (I'm not the speediest tube changer!), Jack and I finished the ride. Steve must believe I get a flat on every ride, but just the ones he is on! He brings me bad luck. But the ride was enjoyable and we even had a few rays of sunshine towards the end. Thanks, Mica, for organizing and posting the ride.

Great ride. It was a great turnout. Enjoyed talking with many of HWer. Thanks for the help..... Eric, Patti, Rex, Norm... It was a bad day for flat tires for me. Total of 3 (1 front 2 back) today. Thanks Mica for organizing the Meetup.

Awesome group of riders. Rain or shine there are smiles in every direction enough to brighten your day and keep your spirits high. That's what I see in these HW meetups. One of the many reasons I keep coming back for more. And this route especially, is one of my favorites. Thanks to Mica for making this meetup happen.

What a great day of riding! Weather went from ok to bad with drizzles, then towards the end the sun finally poked through. The great people always make for an entertaining ride. Thanks, Mica

What a sight, with a group this large charging down the hill on Newcastle Rd. Lots of newer riders, generally strong ones. It was certainly a challenge keeping track of everyone with the varied paces, flats, at least one crash. But with these better riders, they do a good job of figuring things out for themselves. Kudos especially for Lisa, who was contemplating turning back on Shirland Tract, but persevered and handled the finish on Ridge Rd with no trouble at all. And ask her to sing for you in the tunnel under the railroad tracks in Newcastle. The girl has some serious pipes!
