C34 - Modified Auburn Hills Loop

Newcastle/Indian Hill Park n Ride (map)

Selected By: Mica Dugan

Ride Summary:
Terrain: Hilly / Busy and country roads / 3000 ft of climbing
Distance: 34 Miles
Speed: 15 - 18 mph on flat terrain and slower on the hills
Rider Level: C34 (Intermediate)
Sweep: No

We will meet at Newcastle Park & Ride off of Hwy 80 at Indian Hill Exit at 9:45 am and leave promptly at 10:00 am. This route goes up some rather steep hills including Shirland Tract and Ridge Rd, so you should be an intermediate hill-climber. We also start climbing early in the route so if you need additional time to warm up please arrive early!

We'll traverse through some fabulous little-traveled roads of Newcastle, including Millertown, and over to Lincoln including Virginiatown. We'll also go DOWN Steve's favorite, Chili Hill Rd.

Maybe after the ride we can have lunch at the Newcastle Deli (if they are open). Maybe I should call ahead and ask them to make cinnamon rolls! biggrin

The cue sheets have been uploaded to our files section. Please print one out if you need one.

Ridge Road is fun! But I don't see it on the cue sheet? Bald Hill is quite fun too :)

Oh I see it, oops! I mapped it on ridewithgps: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/24089 - is it supposed to be turn "left" on Fowler @ 26.58mi?

Warren very sorry to hear that you had an accident today. Scary! Glad you are okay. I had a hollow feeling in my stomach knowing it happened during our ride. Wish I could have been there to help.

Damn, Warren. Looking for an update on the boards.

Thanks all for the warm welcome back. It was good to see everyone from the saddle!

Shaky start, wheels look so THIN! Wet roads, a little fear to get past made for a slow start. But warmed up through the ride. Have to say, Ridge Rd was a challenge. Definitely have lost conditioning and stamina. 11 weeks off can have that affect!

Feel fine. Shoulder is great (better than legs for sure!) Have to say at this point... I'm back! :D

Warren sorry to hear about the accident. There were a couple of incidents with vehicles today. There was the car that nearly careened into the group at the top of Shirland. Jeff S. almost got taken out when a car turned right, in front of him to get into the Safeway parking lot. BRUTAL!

I think the car at the Shirland Tract is the same one that hit me. Blue PT Cruiser.

That same PT grazed the entire group at the top of Shirland and gave us the horn. Lets put our trust in Karma get them and protect each other better next time. Sorry for your scare. Glad you are OK!

Warren, sorry to hear. Is that where you rode ahead while we were on a regroup?Considering where you said you were hit it wouldn't surprise me if it was that PT Cruiser as he was super nasty honking his horn at us, I remember him doing the same to you as he passed you just as you were leaving and you were all the way to the right.

Mike, Joe, Eric and I ended up going to a different deli (they had chili...?), we didn't know where everyone went. We rode back to Roseville via Taylor. Hope no one was waiting/worried about us!

Good times and laughs with lots of great people. Great to see how a few people have progressed over the past few months and great to see a few people pushing themselves to step up to the intermediate level. Newcastle Deli afterwards is always great way to end a ride. Good ride everyone!

Great seeing so many fun riders out there today! Took a minor detour when I was flappin my gums instead of watching where I was. Took a little short cut to get back on track. Great to see Rob out on a bike again, missed you bro!!! Oh and New Castle Deli is just damn good!!

Thanks for the difficult ride it, was humbling. I now realize the importance of weekly hill climbing. It was so nice of Jeff to wait for me.

Fun ride, good climbs and as usual great folks to ride with. Big turnout with loads of strong riders. Good to see Rob back with the group. Big thanks to Jeff and Mica for organizing. Always exciting to revisit Ridge.

Great route. Lots of variety in topography and scenery and a good workout. Jeff and Mica went out of their way to make sure the ride was safe and enjoyable for everyone. However, when they passed me up the hills riding wheelies, it kind of ruined it for me. They made up for it by suggesting the Newcastle Deli for post ride for great food and plenty of laughs. Thanks guys.

Central meetup location for today's experience. A number of riders were able to leave their cars at home. This course took advantage of what limited outdoor bike riding opportunities in the winter by packing in some challenging hills in a ride that was well worth showing up for. Jeff had cue sheets for all and even though there was no sag, the leaders did a fine job keeping track of the riders and providing assistance when necessary. I missed the after ride lunch party - mmaybe next time. TY

Great route! Loved Ridge at the end, is always a great workout. Met some great people, including some from previous rides.

I always enjoy this route and its variations. Today was well organized - no missed turns (that I know of) and we had a few regrouping spots, although we didn't seem to be too far spread out. I'm glad I made it out with the club today.
