Monitor & Ebbets Pass! Death Ride Primer B-45

Folsom Park n Ride (map)

Selected By: Marsh

This will be the final effort in a series of rides designed to prepare us for the Death Ride.
This will be a hard a challenge, but it is still attainable. There is no food or water along the route so bring whatever you need with you. We'll meet at the Iron Point Light Rail Station Parking lot and carpool up to Parking lot at the junction of Hwy 89 & Hwy 4. in Markleeville.
Carpoolers, please compensate drivers. $5.00 per hour of drive time is fair.
This route is up Monitor Pass & back then to the top of Ebbet's Pass and back.

DANGER!
This ride begins at over 5000' elevation and ascends to over 8800'! This ride is for very strong climbers only!

Distance: 45 miles (Monitor Pass & Ebbet's Pass)
Terrain: Country Roads
Elevation Gained: 6318 ft climbing (Max. 12% grade)
Skill Level: Strong Climbing Riders
Speed: 14-16 mph on flats / slower on hills / 30+ on descents
Sweep: No, but we'll regroup at the turn-arounds.
Pace: As fast as possible, which is not likely to be very fast.

You can see the route and print your own cue sheet here...

I'm buying beers afterward.

As always, helmets are required.

I cut the mileage by 30 miles because I want to get back to Sac in time for a concert by "Because," a Beatles tribute band. Details here... http://www.meetup.com/downtown/calendar/12224770/

Hi Marsh, what time do you estimate that you will be getting to Markleeville? Is there a public rest room at the parking lot at the junction of Hwy 89 & Hwy 4?

It was a lot harder than I expected and I was totally underdressed for the occasion. Note to self. 70° in Markleeville means 40° at the top of Monitor. Probably less with the wind chill. The downhills require quite a lot of concentration too. My rims began to heat and crosswinds caused instability several times.

Monitor Pass should be re-named to Monster Pass. Best to climb those Passes during an organized event so we could have rest stops to refuel instead of nonstop climbing to the top. Took an effort to stay alert at that altitude but looking down steep cliffs helped to keep me awake. And for those who will do the Death Ride, best advise is good brakes for downhills. Bike accelerates even with firm brake application, but only on some points. Not to scare you or anything. Scenery is AMAZING! Thanks Marsh. That was a climb I will remember well.

It was COLD! Next time I'm definitely bringing layers. Beautiful views, and plenty of cyclists from all over the world were there.

This was my first trip to Markleeville, and I missed to connection point right off the bat; parked by Woodfords rather than Monitor pass. But it was good to get me up there and by the end of the day I logged 60 miles and 6500 feet of climbing, and a knowledge of where all of the passed are actually at!. Ascended Luther Pass rather than Carson (duh), then over to Monitor. Saw Rex and Paul descending Monitor as I started the ascent. It was up and down and back over to Woodfords for the drive back to Sacto. I met some friendly folks from a Truckee cycling club on a “Choose your distance” event, and some other folks from Reno training for the Death ride. All in all a very good day, thanks to Marsh for getting me up there. I will be back up there next week to do it better.

Awesome ride and experience. None of the group and been up to Monitor pass before but me (in a car) so I had a very good idea of the 'trouble' we're getting ourselves into ;-D We did about 30 miles and about 3000 feet of climbing. (we skipped Ebbet's pass). The climb is HARD because it never gives you a break and because of the altitude. Everyone but myself was feeling the effects of the elevation-maybe because I'm a mtn man ;-D I was actually feeling stronger the higher we went. But alas, the cold and wind got to us and we beat a hasty retreat from the summit and decided to call it a day and go have a beer. Overall, great ride, great company, great food and beer, and amazing scenery.
