Winter Hill Series, Ride 5 - Base Miles

Hagan Park (map)

Selected By: JoelS

Route: http://ridewithgps.co...
C/68
Distance: ~68 miles, approx 3200 feet.
Terrain: A few hills, some rollers, some flats
Ability: Intermediate. If you've done the previous 4 Hill Series Rides, you will be fine.
Speed: 16'ish on flats. Saving energy for the hills.
Sweep: No, but we'll regroup at the top of each hill and at key turns.

This is ride 5 of the Winter Hill Series.

* Use of Aerobars prohibited on these rides (if you have them, don't use them). They are not safe for group rides. If you use aerobars, you will be asked to leave. No questions, no debates.

We're back to the normal ride start at the parking lot just outside Hagan Park. Let me know if you'd like directions.

This ride is NOT SWEPT! If you fall too far behind, we will not wait for you. Make sure to have a cue sheet (you can print out a cue sheet from the route link at the top) and understand the route.

If you RSVP as Maybe, it is assumed a NO unless you change it before the ride.

Rain cancels, showers does not.

I know we're picking up Mica en route (Mica, bet there by 9:15 or so). Is everyone else meeting at the start?

Joel, will do. Are you gonna bring the stem along or should I ride back to Hagen at the end and stop by your place?

Do you want to carry it along on the ride? Either is fine, let me know.

Go ahead and bring it. I can stash it in my jersey or seat bag if I have room. Will probably have my jacket/vest with me so I'll have plenty of room to carry it.

Rex! Are you missing your pump? I saw a mini pump on the ground as I was pulling out of Hagan. I tried to honk but I don't think you heard me. I tried to go back for the pump, but I think one of those soccer people might have picked it up :(

Hey Alex. I didn't even realize it was gone until you mentioned it. Oh well. Them soccer players could use it to pump more air into their soccer balls. Didn't see Javier and company but saw Rick with his family on the trail just past Hazel.

No problem Rex! Also I don't have a GPS, my cyclocomputer's altimeter is barometric, so it is not accurate.

It was cold, wet, foggy, cloudy. But the company was great, which made it a lot of fun.

I wasn't sure if I could pedal 68 miles after yesterday's ride but had to see what Chili Hill was like. I'm glad I went. Now I can say I've climbed Chili Hill. Many thanks to Joel for checking to see that I'm still with the group through the last mile. Turned out to be 70 miles today. Alex's GPS showed 3100' vs Joel's which if I remember right sounded like 2600 to 2800'. Maybe Joel's GPS cancels out hills that are too easy for him.

Can't go wrong with the Newcastle hills; but props go out to Joel for his setting this up and leading the group. Today had an extra challenge with the fog and wet roads - we made it back safely and while there were opportunities to get lost on the way - the leadership and the group kept everyone on the route. I met the group on the ARBT ( glad Joel was agreeable to doing this ) A more central starting meetup is in my opinion a reasonable option for rides in El Dorado Hills , Loomis, Newcastle, Auburn. Thanks Joel and Mica for leading.

Ride was great! Weather, not so much. Was foggier than yesterday, didn't get to see the sun. Oh well. Went up Chili Hill without feeling light headed ! That's a first. Thanks Joel!

Started the morning off a little rough with a flat @ Bannister Park en route to meet everyone @ the Sunrise Y. After that things were great. Was quite interesting riding through the fog layer as we head up towards Newcastle. Stopped @ the Newcastle Deli for lunch and got my hands on a Turkey, Swiss, Bacon, and Avacado sandwich grilled on a chibatta roll....yum! The other half I saved tasted just as good when I got home. Got a bit chili on the decent after lunch heading home...brrrrrr! Great route and riders. Chili Hill was a challenge, but much easier this time around. See everyone next week.
