D35 San Francisco Tour

Ride Summary
Terrain: Mostly flat with some hills.
Distance: 35 miles
Speed: 15mph on the flats
Rider Level: Advanced beginner
Sweep: Yes

This is a tour of San Francisco by bike where we ride at a leisurely pace and stop along the way to see the sites and take a few pictures - this is not about getting in more miles or climbing hills. We will visit Pier 39, Fishermans Wharf, The Golden Gate Bridge, Seal Rock, The Great Highway (runs along the Pacific Ocean) and Golden Gate Park (closed to cars on Sundays).

We will meet at the Davis Park n Ride (I-80 Mace Blvd exit) at 7:45am and leave 8am sharp. You are encouraged to carpool and share the gas expenses and toll charges ($8 total for two bridges).

We will leave Davis and drive to the Presidio in San Francisco. Parking at the Presidio is free. We will gather in the parking lot near the Presidio Bowling Alley (Moraga Ave and Montgomery St) in case someone gets stuck behind in traffic. Do not park in the small lot for the tennis courts and bowling alley. Look for me across the street in the HUGE parking lot - I will be near the big tree with a white fence around it.

It can get pretty cold on the Golden Gate Bridge so dress appropriately. Bring water, money for lunch, and a camera if you have one. The mileage is an estimate and it really depends on how many detours we take.

This is San Francisco, so there will be short some but steep hills. This is NOT a ride for first time cyclists. You will be fine if you have done a 30 to 40 mile ride before, and have hill climbing experience.

You can post a message here if you are looking for a ride, or you are driving and can take passengers. Hopefully this will make it a bit easier for everyone to carpool.

It should be a great ride. I did a test run of the planned route last Sunday and there were more hills than I originally thought. Not to scare anyone off but be prepared for a workout and some incredible views of San Francisco.

A bit cold but otherwise a great ride. It was a bit rushed as we were trying to get back to the cars before dark - this would be a great summer ride when there is more daylight. Thanks Perry for leading us to a sporting goods store to repair the SPD cleat. Thanks Michael for taking us to a great Mexican restaurant.

A bit chilly; the fog burned off and we had some pretty spectacular views from both our high points and low ones...down at the beach. We saw dancing roller bladers, and Buffalo in the park, and the greatest Beagle puppy ever! The lunch "joint" let us take over...putting our bikes inside, rearranging tables etc. We made it with no flats, and no falls! Great idea for a day in SF!

Great Ride. Though it was sooo cold didn't even work up a sweat on the hills(could that be because I walked the last part of them?) Thanks everyone for the patiance and help while I had to buy new cleats. Thanks Richard for organizing this ride would love to do it again. P.S. thanks for the carpool ride too
