Starbucks - Auburn Folsom & Douglas (map)
Ride Summary:
Terrain: Hilly / Busy and country roads / 1,750 ft Climbing
Distance: 31 Miles
Speed: 14-16 mph on flats / definitely slower on hills (5-7 mph)
Rider Level: Strong Beginner Minimum
Sweep: Yes
If you feel that some of the HW intermediate rides are too hard, too hilly and too fast, then this ride is for you. Jeff Sanford introduced me to this ride and it has been a staple for HW. This ride is a step up from the hills at Beals Pt. However, you must be a strong beginner or budding intermediate to be able to do this route. You should be comfortable going up and or have been to Beals at least 4/5 times.
This is truly a slow poke's edition. If you don't have strong climbing legs yet, then this is a good place to start. The route is also a good introduction to some roads outside of the ARBT.
We'll meet at Starbucks at 8:30 and roll at 8:45 SHARP.
There are 3 major climbs to challenge you. Sierra College, Newcastle & Indian Hill. There are small rolling hills but some of them are in the 4 - 8% grades. The route offers 17 miles of rolling hills then the rest is downhill - well, almost all downhill at Auburn-Folsom Rd. We'll take our break at the Flower Farm Nursery & coffee shop on Horseshoe Bar/Aub-Folsom Rd. Again, another favorite. If the violinist and guitars trio are at Flower Farm, someone better drag me out of there to ride to Indian Hill after the break
.
Route Cue Sheets - Updated 10/28/09
This route and pace is intended for advanced beginner/budding intermediate hill climbers. That said, Intermediate and advanced riders are welcome to join us. However, there will be an intermediate, hilly ride event that will be running along side this ride if you want more of a challenge.
Please remember to bring plenty of food and water, and even some sunscreen. Bundle up appropriately. As always your helmet is required.
If you have any questions as to whether this ride is for you please feel free to ask!
Coffee break at Starbucks afterwards - optional.
I will cancel early in the morning should rain become a factor - only a big downpour will cancel this ride.
Just had a spot open up for a co-ed football game that starts at 11 am so I may just hammer through after riding with everyone to the Flower Farm.
Hey Phrotis, Are you going to let Ms. Sharel get away with that smack talk?
and the banter begins...now we have Phred, Otis, AND Phrotis to keep in line! ;-p
Lines are meant to be crossed not kept. Good luck with that Mica. :o)
OK intermediates, please RSVP here http://www.hammerinwheels.com/calendar/11877222/![]()
and remove yourself from this event.
Phred, as of yet Phrotis is not signed up.
Is he riding w/ the advance group?
Blaine - Otis is riding with the advanced grp. Well, I think he is. I may need to double check with him on that. :o)
Blaine - Bailed on the fast grp. I will be helping Lourdes. Matt, I will see your bet and up it one more hill. haha Phred quit spreading rumors, it is not polite.
How did my name get dragged into this betting circle? I'm not even a "Bettin' man"...
Yea sure Matt, like I am going to fall for that one. Looks like Otis wants revenge or something.
Hey Phred, If Otis is riding with the slow group, is it possible Phrotis could be tackling Shriland Tract.
That phrotis could be my new Hero!
Blaine, Phrotis will be riding Shirland Tract in spirit. :o)
Hello anyone reading. I'm Yvonne, a new rider to the group. I was wearing a yellow jacket, and black and yellow booties. Several riders commented on my ancient booties too. I was riding the cervello. You are all awesome. Too bad we didn't get to stay together for the ride down Auburn/Folsom it's a great way to draft, and save energy. Maybe next time.
Yvonne
Yeah, yeah, more hills, Jeff said he would lead us "intermediate " riders up additional hills. . .right Jeff?. . . :-D
