Winter Hill Series, Ride 1

Hagan Park (map)

Selected By: JoelS

Route: http://ridewithgps.co...
You can print a cue sheet from this link.
C/39
Distance: ~39 miles, approx 1600 feet.
Terrain: Flats, a couple of hills, some rollers
Ability: Just to intermediate. If you've done any of the rides that head out from Newcastle and include Ridge Rd, you should be fine.
Speed: 16'ish on flats. Saving energy for the hills.
Sweep: No, but we'll regroup at the top of each hill and at key turns.

This is ride 1 of the Winter Hill Series. It's a good ride to gauge your fitness as we start.

Note that we will stop at Bealls for water bottle refill, snacks, BR, and regroup. This is the last water stop until we get back to Nimbus.

We leave from the parking lot just outside Hagan Park in Rancho Cordova at 9am sharp. Be a bit early to unpack and get ready. Water bottle, helmet, snacks required. I expect we'll be done by noon or so.

Make sure to have a bar or two! You should plan on eating something at Bealls. Better to eat a light breakfast and snack on the ride, than to eat a moderate to large breakfast and plan on not snacking.

Before we head out, we'll discuss cadence, spinning, hill technique, bike handling, hydration/feeding, and whatever else comes up. Likely this will be old hat for some of you, but may be new for others.

Rain cancels.

This will be the starting location of most of the rides in the series.
From 50,
Exit at Mather Field Dr. Head N
RIGHT on Folsom
LEFT on Coloma
LEFT on Chase
PASS the high school on the right.
Just before the park entrance, turn RIGHT into a parking lot.

Joel, it looks like a pretty nice loop. Should be a fast ride coming home.

As expected! Had I not signed up for this event, given the weather I might have stayed on the couch. Glad I got in this workout ahead of the rain/snow. Great effort to attack the hills, wind and put up with the cold. Thanks to Joel for a solid event. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Fun time folks, thanks for coming. The Wind made for a tougher ride than expected. Well done everyone.

Every ride offers lessons: 1) Joe and Curt are strong riders 2) the flat along the river is a blast with a tailwind 3) the beach at Beals is really big in the winter 4) Empire Ranch Rd is no fun into the wind 5) my winter outfit has some missing pieces 6) Mica is a good sport (of course we knew that). Sorry to cut out early, but I had another afternoon ride, and after riding from Folsom to the Hatchery and back 6 times last week, it was getting a little tiresome. Good ride, everyone! And the afternoon ride was wetter than the morning ride. So maybe lesson 7 is in there somewhere.

Cold, numb fingers, frozen toes, chilly head winds while climbing, and then some rain. You think you'll just wake up soon and realize it's just a bad dream... I'm just kidding, I loved the challenge. Every ride is different and each time I feel a boost of confidence just to know I did it. What's remarkable is everybody kept pushing like it was just another day in the sun. Thanks to Joel for some great training pointers to get better. Mica caught up with the group just in time to charge headwind which helped me make it to the top of the hill alive.

I think I am ready to ride in Truckee next week! I enjoyed the route and I'm looking forward to the increased difficulty the next couple of weeks. Good to see that Mica and Paulo were able to chase us down.

The weather wasn't great, but the company was excellent. Thanks for letting me join, look forward to making it to the rest of the winter hill series rides.

It was cold and windy for sure. The wind wade it feel like we climbed a lot more. Got a few sprinkles on the ride, but the rain held off. Steve "graciously" (and I'm sure gratifyingly) reminded me I needed to use my mirror...;-p Definitely getting a jacket and boot covers for weather like this.
