A63 & A91 - The Iowa Hill Challenge

Ride Summary:

Terrain: Long climbs!, Steep climbs! Long decent!
Distance: 63 and 91 mile options
Speed: irrelevant, you are either climbing or descending, not much flat on this ride.
Rider Level: Solid Intermediate riders and up.
Sweep: We have secured SAG support for this ride. It will not be swept by a rider but SAG will never be far away.

Please read all the details of this event before you RSVP!

Please arrive early to get ready. We are going to be on the road as close to 7am as possible!!

The routes
Unless your ears perk up when people mention punishing hill climbing, you should avoid this ride. Please keep in mind that this is a ride not a race. Go at your own pace so you can make sure you finish. You should also be able to take care of your own repairs.

Both routes start at Raleys In Auburn. We will climb our way to Colfax and Iowa Hill Road via country roads. Once on Iowa Hill Rd. we will rapidly descend down to the American River, only to climb our way back out. At mile marker 18 we will encounter the toughest part of the climbing. This section is ~2 miles long and the grade averages 13.5%! You have been warned. You climb 1100 feet in less than 2 miles. shock

Once the rough stuff is over we will continue climbing on Iowa Hill Rd, only it is more gradual, all the way back to Foresthill Road. Once on Foresthill Road it is a straight shot back to the booming metropolis of Foresthill and Wortons market. The 63 mile option will continue up Foresthill Road and return to Raleys. You are looking at over 6000 feet of climbing and almost all of it is in the first 38 miles to complete this route.

Map of the Iowa Hill loop

The 91 mile option will make a ~30 mile trek down Mosquito Ridge Road and climb the "Corkscrew Wall". This is an out and back route so you can turn around at any time. Just keep in mind that the first portion of this leg is a decent so you will need to climb back up to Foresthill. Once back at Wortons the 91 milers will head back to Raleys on Foresthill Road. You are looking at an additional ~3500-4000 feet of climbing to complete this leg. 10k feet for the day.

Here is a map of the Mosquito Ridge/Corkscrew Wall leg. This is just to give you an idea of where we are going, "The Wall" is not listed on the map.

Cue sheets will be available next week. I will also bring several copies to the ride.

SAG Support
Lourdes has GRACIOUSLY VOLUNTEERED to drive a SAG wagon for this ride! She plans to follow us along the route for the entire day, please be sure to thank her for volunteering her time!

We have procured a minivan to ensure we have plenty of room. Our SAG wagon will carry all our goods so we can ride light. It will also carry:

  • Light fuel (fruit, chips, pretzels, etc) and lots of ice cold water
  • First Aid kit
  • Tool kit to do minor repairs and good floor pump.
  • chairs and some shade for our rest stops.

We will have 4 scheduled rest stops for the 63 mile group and 6 for the 91 mile crew. All stops will be noted on the cue sheets. Since SAG will never be far away so you can always get what you need between stops. The final rest stop for the 63 milers is at Wortons in Foresthill will be the end of the SAG support. You will be 16 miles from the end and almost all downhill. The SAG will continue down Mosquito Ridge Road with the 91 milers. Everyone will be given a sheet with cell numbers should the need arise.

FYI - It will not be feasible to return you to your car if you drop out, you will be riding with the SAG wagon until you are able to ride again or after everyone has finished. In an effort to keep the group on track if you fall too far behind the group you may be SAG'd to catch up the the rest of the group.

I am collecting $10 from everyone to make sure there is no out of pocket expense for our SAG driver. We need $$ for gas, food, minivan, and her time. You can pay via Paypal using the link at the top of the page or you can bring your $10 and pay before we leave. Please do not forget your money!!! If you have any issues with this please contact me directly.

If you would like to comment on SAG support please post a note on the message board here.

What do I need to bring
While we do have a minivan there are several people signed up so space will be limited. You are responsible for your own food! You can have 1 grocery bag of food/bike items that should be clearly marked with your name. There will be a large cooler if you have items you need to keep cold but again space will be limited. Suggested items would be:

  • 2-4 tubes w/ patch kits
  • sunscreen
  • bug repellent
  • chapstick (wind burnt lips are the worst!)
  • camera
  • whatever food/drinks you think you will need. Cold water will be provided.
  • Helmet - this one is not suggested, its mandatory!

Final thoughts
Please email me your cell number. I will be compiling a list for everyone to carry should you need to get in touch with someone. We will also have several radios as cell service is sketchy in some areas.

If you would like to comment on the ride itself or see actual GPS data please post a note on the message board here.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ride safe and good luck!!

Glad to have the date & post. After reading the description here, I'm thinking I will alter my current century training schedule a bit to be rested for this.

Well tomorrow is the day we have all been waiting for. I don't think I am going to be able to sleep to night. It is like the day before we head off to climb Mt Everest, and just calling it another hill. Tomorrow will put together all of our training to the test to see if we have what it takes to be the king of the mountains, or just another little ride in the hills of Auburn. You make the choice, but we will see you tomorrow ready or not.

Whether it was the 63 or the 91 route, I have to take my hat off to ALL of you who made it out there to tackle this monster of a ride. I would have liked to make it out there but i had to work. Can't wait to see the pics of the ride.

Gonna mark this one a success for me, only made it about 3/4 the way up the Cork Screw Wall, but most of that was on a rear tire I couldn't keep over about 30psi (and stopped 3 times to keep that much in). That extra effort sorta counts for the last 1/4, right? :D

Always felt like someone was watch'n out for me too, thanks for all the encouragement, HW is THE group to ride with!

MY final stats, 95 miles, 11.7 avg, 8 hours in the saddle, 11 hours clock. 10k' climbing? ??

I really have to take my hat off to the organizers, the riders, and HW in general for this one. The preparation, planning, and support was really superb, and I was *damn* happy to be out on such a nice day with such a strong group of riders. I'm not sure I've ever had more fun on a bike. I look forward to doing the full route next time (even though my keester is thanking me for sticking with my decision to do 63 today--and I was a hair's breadth from trying the long route).

I have never suffered this much and enjoyed myself this much in one day. This was a record for me, both in climbing and mileage, on the same day! It was an incredible confidence builder. Big thanks to Lourdes for the SAG support, and the help with the flat!
What a great group to ride with, congrats to everyone who did both rides.

I feel like I went through a meat grinder. Iowa Hill Road is tough, a long relentless climb on some VERY steep grades (Over 20% several times!). You end up climbing over 4000 feet in about 18 miles. Some ill timed flats seperated Chris and I from the faster group So I was not able to go to the top of the corkscrew wall, not that I intended to go all the way, I did want to get down there and climb up a little bit. After Chris and I took a food break I ended up riding down a little bit until I mean the riders on their return. I ended the day with exactly 70 miles and 7001 feet of climbing and this rates as #2 on my most difficult ride list. Depending on how I feel tomorrow it may unseat the Davis Double as my new #1. Everyone did a masterful job on the ride! Thanks to Chris for the company and laughs on the 4th leg and lunch! Thanks again to Greg for the help with the cue sheets and a HUGE THANK YOU to Lourdes for her SAG support. Next time we'll stick to the 63 mile option.

Well now I can say I did Iowa Hill, Ride up to Colfax is getting easy or I am just getting better. Fast down hill on Iowa Hill to the river, and then the 2 miles climb up I though would be the hardest part of the ride, until I road the rest of the road to Forest hill. This ride was for hill climbers, I olny did the 63 miles because my legs started to cramp up. 63 miles with 6683' of climbing, in 6 hours of ride time, I think I did well.
