8700 La Riviera Drive, Sacramento, CA (map)
This is an easy ride on a nearly flat, paved trail.
Distance: Approximately 20 miles, out & back.
Speed: 7 to 12 mph, or whatever is comfortable.
Duration: Approximately 2.5 - 3 hours, riding and breaks.
Rider Level: E20 (Beginner)
Sweep: Yes
The ride begins at 9:00 – arrive in time to be prepared for a 9:00 start. We'll meet in the northwest corner of the Big Lots parking lot on the corner of Watt Avenue and La Riviera Drive, across the street from the trailhead for the American River Parkway Bike Trail.
We cross the river and head downstream, along the Lower American River, through shady riparian forest and open grassland past Campus Commons Golf Course, behind Cal Expo and Bushy Lake, past the junctions for the Sacramento Northern and Ueda Parkway Bike Trails, along Bannon Slough and into Discovery Park. We’ll take a break somewhere near the trail’s 0.0 mile mark before returning the same way. On the ride back we’ll cross the Guy West Bridge and do the last two miles on the south side of the river for a little change of scenery.
This ride is mainly intended for beginners, though all levels are welcome. We’ll ride at a casual pace and take whatever breaks are desired. We want to take a little time to get to know each other and to discuss ideas for future weekday morning rides.
Bring sunscreen and plenty of water and snacks; helmets are required.
