Newcastle/Indian Hill Park n Ride (map)
Terrain: mixture of rural and urban (is Auburn really urban?), hilly, both up and down
Distance: about 35 not all easy miles
Speed: if you're good, 14 mph, or 11 mph if you're still working on it
Rider Level: if you've been here for the whole series, you are pretty much an Intermediate now. If you are new to the series, this will be a good Intermediate final exam.
Sweep: yes, we'll be there for you
Departure time: 8:15
This is the last in the Spring Series of Intermediate Rides, not quite the longest of the bunch, but with the most climbing of all. We return to the Newcastle Park N Ride for the start, but forego Indian Hill Rd in favor of some new hills, namely Powerhouse and Shirland Tract Rds. Then we find a new route through Auburn, part of which will be used by the Amgen Tour in May. After that we show you a new climb, which gives us a fun downhill to now-familiar Mt Vernon Rd, which we use briefly to get to the delightful rural valley featuring Millertown Rd. Then we extend our use of Wise Rd to head west, and enjoy a thrilling descent to the valley floor on Crater Hill and Chili Hill Rds. Soon we head further west on Fruitvale and Hungry Hollow Rds, which we used briefly in Ride 1, before returning eastward on Virginiatown Rd to once again test our legs and lungs on Ridge Rd. It should be interesting to see if our conditioning has improved since the ascent of Ridge on Zach's ride the week before.
Here is a link to the map and cue sheet.
Of course you should bring some refreshments, especially of the liquid variety, and by now you will all know about things like helmets, maybe even mirrors. And bring a camera, as the flowers should be out in force by then. Not that many of you will be looking at flowers or thinking about photography going up Ridge Rd (unless, like our erstwhile leader Jeff S, you see an opportunity to justify a rest period
).
If you haven't been on other rides in the Spring Series, you might want to check with one of the club's Assistant Organizers with whom you've already ridden to see if they think you are up to tackling this ride. Tell them it's a C35 with 2600' of climbing.
Enjoy this one, all of you Spring Series veterans. This will make you an official HW Intermediate Rider. I'll miss you on this one, but think about the Tour de Lincoln in May! That will tie all of these rides together, plus show you a couple more great roads.
Cue sheet has been updated with regroups and a few cautions on turns.
@ Javier: I have 35 cue sheets for everyone. Should have enough.
@ Scott: Well, that's the implication ;-p
Beautiful ride! Accidentally cheated myself out of 10 miles, though...if Blaine ever tells you about a little 2 mile short cut... don't listen! Did we abandon Rex at Gold? That was mean! Sorry Rex!!! I plead ignorance!
Nice to meet some new faces today.... Lynnie, Randy and Don.
Thank you, Mica and Chris for another fun ride!!!
I took the short cut coming back; had just climbed Baxter (in middle ring again!). But didn't know the easy way took 10 miles off the total ride. Boo Hoo. I will be riding Winters Wonderland tomorrow. The 24 miles I did rider was great.
Great diverse group of riders. Do we get to do this again?
Oh yes - Patty, nice to see & talk with you again after all these years! Take care.
I had a great time riding with you all today. It was nice meeting new people.... I'm looking forward to riding more with you!!!
Thanks Mica for the cue sheets and for leading the ride. Had a great time. Bob and I missed a turn and figured it out about 3 miles down the (wrong) road. Backtracking we got back on course, but struggled to catch up with the group. We ended up doing 42 miles total. I wish I had taken Lynn's and Susan's short cut!
A great ride even with that one wrong turn. The hills challenged me yet again, and though I'm not too tired now, my bike is exhausted.
Thanks Mica and Chris for leading this leg-burner of a ride, on a day with weather so good I may have actually sunburned my knuckles--good stuff :) Didn't have a flat until the start of the animal ride back to Folsom; maybe I ran over some of those wood screws that the cyclist-hater truckers said they'd been throwing down on Ridge Rd. Sigh...
@ Frank, yea funny how brave 2 dudes in a truck driving by are when facing multiple riders ...I didn't see them stop to get out of his truck and say their little joke.
Thanks, Chris and Mica I enjoyed a great ride. I had fun riding riding with the young guns from the High School M.B. Team on this ride, that is when we could keep up with them!
Congrats to all that completed the Spring Series! Doing these roads often will increase your speed and stamina on hills, plus get you ready to do more! Towards the end of the route we got a little split up due to flat tires (me), chain issues (Chris), wrong turns by a few, and "shortcuts" (Blaine ;-p). Though we all made it back in one piece. A few of us enjoyed the fruits of our labor after at the Newcastle Produce and Deli. See you all soon.
@ Randy ...welcome to my world!! ...just finshed 66 miles of trying to keep up with 6 of them in fact :-\
Folks, I'll be bringing updated cue sheets with regroups put in.
