Spring Series 2: C34 "Loomis Coffee Break Ride"

Vic's Market (map)

Selected By: Jeff Sanford

Terrain: rural, moderately flat, some hills
Distance: about 34 miles
Speed: probably average about 13
Rider Level: for those who are embarking on intermediate riding
Sweep: Yes
Departure time: 8:30 am

Come join us for another scenic ride through the foothills! This is the second event of our Spring Training Series. The first ride was relatively flat and this one kicks it up a notch with a few inclines of 8 - 10% This is for those riders who have been riding a bit, but are looking to take their fitness level up a little.

We will meet at Vic's Market near the corner of Oak Ave Pkwy and Santa Juanita in Folsom. From there, we'll travel north and west through Granite Bay and Rocklin to tackle the two Sierra College hills, and then work our way back to Loomis to the Wild Chicken for coffee and snacks. After that respite we will work our way back to Vic's via King, Val Verde, Wells, Laird, Cavitt Stallman and some other obscure but pleasant roads.

The ride is 34 miles and has about 1500 feet of climbing, including some classic 6-8% grinds (Sierra College I&II) and a shorter/steeper one (English Colony). Here's a detailed map/cue sheet of the route.

Because of the large number of riders already signed up for this ride, this ride will permit a great deal of freedom in terms of pace. If you are an experienced rider and can follow a route sheet, once you sign in and the announcements are made, you are free to go, with the proviso that you sign in when you finish the ride. That way we won't have 40+ folks all arriving at the Wild Chicken at once, nor will we clog up the roads. If you are not that experienced, we will still have a traditional HW ride with one or more leaders and have periodic regroup points. For everyone, though, you are strongly advised to devise some way of displaying a cue sheet somewhere on your bike where you can see it while riding. Using simple little office clips or tape on your brake cables will work fine. In fact we will provide some to the first 35 who need one. A cue sheet stuffed in the pocket on the rear of your jersey might as well be taped to the bottom of your shoe, as you will have to stop in order to read it. Even a sandwich bag taped to your handlebar tape will hold a cue sheet and keep it dry if it rains. It doesn't have to be elegant, just useful.

The event is definitely ON. We will have the sun, but it will be on the cool side to start, plus breezy as the day goes on. Dress in layers, and let's have a good time!

Yvonne, you might need to sign up on ridegps to view the map (it's free and easy plus you don't get any e-mails from them). If you just can't see the cue sheet there is a tab on the upper left hand part that will bring it out.

I'll be bringing plenty of cue sheets for this route.

Jeff, I bet your finger is just dancing with excitement (or quivering in fear) for the tons of pictures to be taken.

Folks, I've updated the map/cue sheet link. It has regrouping points and a few added turns that weren't there. So take a look before Saturday's ride. I will be bringing copies for those that need one.

    Mica, Steve.......
Is it possible to meet up with you when you turn left onto E. Rsvl Pkwy Saturday morning from Barton? Then I would peel off at Cavitt Stallman and come down Auburn Folsom to home.?? Yvonne

Yvonne: Of course, and we'll even bring you a cue sheet and a clip to hold it. But keep in mind that we won't be able to give you full mileage credit for the ride. Oh, that's right, we don't give mileage credit! So I guess there is no downside, other than not hearing all of that valuable pre-ride info for which we are so famous. Of course you could buy our DVD : )

This is turning out to be a breakthrough ride for the Hammerin Wheels, as the signup level is way beyond anything we've tried to do in the past. So be prepared to get broken into smaller groups, some of which will be totally self-supporting, and others will be the usual more controlled and guided groups. After all, the Spring Series is about learning the roads and riding skills needed to enjoy country riding, not to send you off totally on your own. But you can do that, if you wish.

The sweep may mention this but I hurt my elbow when i fell not thinking i had cleats on - not used to it and then again - took a cab back to our starting place. Will not be in the remaining of the series. Bike got somewhat damaged. Unfortunately I forgot the sweeps name but I thank him for his help very much.

Hope you're ok, and will be able to get back to riding soon, Friedhelm. I bonked on Seirra College Hill 2, didn't stop, but never got my pace back. Even so, no one want to see another rider injured.

Great route and people today. A little nippy out at the start, but the sun warmed us up. Wonderful to see so many people out on one ride: newbies, regulars, and those we haven't (or I haven't) seen in a while.

The Hammerin' Wheels looked good out there today, and there certainly was a big bunch of them. We took the headwind in stride going up the two big hills, and really cruised down English Colony and Humphrey Rds. to the Wild Chicken, which accommodated us nicely. Some new faces, some familiar ones, a couple flats, no one lost, and one guy who always thought he was #19. A big thanks Perry Spetz and Jeff Sanford for their extra support efforts, as well as to Chris and Mica. And a big salute to all of those great riders. As fellow old-timer Zach and I were saying at the Wild Chicken, the nature of the club rides has really changed, with more and better riders. But still great people! Glad to be a part of it.

Great day to be out on the bike!! The sun was more than welcome after nearly freezing to death before the ride. Fantastic job by all! Thanks to all the ride leaders who lent a hand with the ride. Format appeared to work rather well. Great to see all the new faces out there and great to see those who I have not seen in a while. Hope everyone can make it out again next week where we tackle...dum dum dum...Ridge Road!!! Newcastle Deli should help make up for it!

Another great ride. I would like to say that on most rides I never have a problem fitting in, meeting new people, and seening everyone excepted. This felt this ride had a bit of old High School bs about it. I NEVER hae a hard time meeting new peopel, but this ride, maybe because of the weather or something, use different. I actually had one of the "speedster" rider actually turn his back on me during a conversation. Could be an anomoly. But I tried to have other conversation with other groups, and was meet with slight regard. I was obiously not welcome to the conversation. Odd for one of the best turnouts. Maybe a turnout for speical groups and cliques. Happens sometimes. Usually not on the outsider end though. I'll still do more rides, but this was an oddity for such a large and usually VERY friendly group.

It was a great route, and it confirmed a few things I've heard about Loomis. I thought it could've been about ten or fifteen miles longer, though. Maybe for Summer Series when everyone's fully out of hibernation:) All the same, once we caught up with everyone (arrived late) it was great to meet new faces and the people were awesome, as always. Thanks for managing so many people so well you guys!!!!
  • Alex Chiu
Was great in that it split up into groups depending upon ability. Lots of new people, some familiar faces. Route was good, definitely challenging for all skill levels. Left with my group from Crazy Chicken when the next group started rolling in. Great social ride.

Great Ride! Had some new experiences, my first flat and clipping out on a hill without falling. Thank you to Rex, Jeff and all who helped me while my husband was trying to catch SteveMD on the Sierra College hill. All of you are awesome.
