This is a compilation of several Hammerin’ Wheels Newcastle rides with Baxter Grade / Bald Hill thrown in, not because it’s in the way…But because IT IS the way!!! I rode this on Sunday Oct 11th and liked it so much, I thought I’d put it on the calendar. Much of this ride will be familiar....some of it is challenging....but all of it is FUN!!! We’ll be taking a break at the always AWESOME Newcastle Deli.

Most of the climbing will be done in the first 38 miles, after that, lots of mid speed rollers all the way back to Vic's. You should be comfortable with the distance and have done Ridge Rd (or an equivalent) at least twice. Baxter Grade / Bald Hill which runs 4% - 10%, is a good tough challenge. The rest of the hills (Sierra College & Indian Hill Rd) are moderate climbs of 4% - 6%.

We'll meet at Vic's Market near the corner of Oak Ave Pkwy and Santa Juanita at 8:00am. From there, we'll travel through Granite Bay, Loomis and Newcastle with a break (mile 35.5) at the Newcastle Deli. This ride includes some beautiful scenic vista’s especially when looking south & west from the top of Bald Hill Ridge. After snacking at the Newcastle Deli, we’ll make our way back to Vic’s by first climbing Indian Hill Rd and then descending Shirland Tract, Rattlesnake Bar Newcastle Rd, Brennans, King, Val Verde, Wells and Barton as we wind our way back to Vic’s.

I’m linking the ride at mapmyride.com, but because their directions (and elevation profile) are a little hit & miss, I’ll bring corrected route sheets.

Ride Summary:
Terrain: a mix of urban and rural, with 3 nice climbs: Sierra College, Baxter Grade & Indian Hill.
Distance: about 62.5 miles or for those of us from Europe, 100k.
Distance note: for those who’d like to do the first half of this ride, but would like to shorten the second half, I’ll provide an alternative return route sheet that cuts out ~ 11 miles, shortening the ride to ~ 51 miles.
Elevation gain: ~ 3900 (62.5 mile route)
Speed: 15 -18 mph flat roads, 6 mph uphill, downhill – let her run.
Rider Level: C62.5 (beginning intermediate and up, with a few hill rides under their wheels)
Sweep: No – but if you meet the minimum "rider level" listed above, it’ll be a fun but challenging ride. Contact me if you have any questions. If you’re not a solid intermediate, you’ll need a "Triple" for this ride. BTW, if you’re not sure what a "Triple" is, count your chain rings.

Helmets are required, as is hydration.

We will leave promptly at 8:00 am.

Note: Rain cancels this ride.

Hey folks, Good riding with you guys today. We had perfect temps for doing Baxter and Bald hill. 3900 ft of climbing in 62 miles and guys made it seem like a walk in the park, great job!

This is among my most challenging rides so far. After getting pounded climbing Baxter you're still a long way back, and it's not all downhill either. Last time I went on this route we took Ridge Rd. and finished 51 miles. Even then that was already a challenge. I must say it's building up my confidence. Pacing is the key. Can you believe Rob climbed Baxter on the big ring. How is that possible? Hope he recovers quick. We'll sure miss him on Tuesday's speed rides. Thanks to all for a great ride.
